Tell MI Senators: Help Formerly Incarcerated People Rebuild

Details

This bill amends an existing law to require the Michigan Department of Corrections to provide incarcerated people with current state IDs no fewer than 90 days before their release. It also removes a clause that allowed parole boards to penalize incarcerated people for failing to begin the process of obtaining ID before their hearings.

Without a current, valid ID, it's very difficult to do basic things like finding an apartment, getting a job, or enrolling in school or training. Formerly incarcerated people already face many barriers when re-entering society, and every barrier makes it more likely that they will re-offend and end up back in prison. Michigan can do more to set up returning citizens for success, and that starts with providing them with current IDs.
