Voting Access For All

Michigan lawmakers have reintroduced the Michigan Voting Rights Act in both the Michigan Senate and Michigan House. The legislation would create stronger state-level protections against voter suppression, vote dilution, and barriers to participation as federal voting rights protections continue to weaken. Michigan does not currently have a standalone state Voting Rights Act, meaning many voting rights safeguards depend primarily on federal law and court enforcement.
Senate Bills 961-964 and companion bills House Bills 5969 - 5972 would:
● Prohibit voter denial, dilution and suppression and create legal remedies for violations. ● Establish a nonpartisan and transparent voting rights institute and database to provide centralized research, training and public information on voting systems and election administration. ● Expand language-access requirements for election-related materials to ensure language minority communities have equal access to the voting process. ● Strengthen and clarify protections for voters with disabilities and voters who require assistance casting a ballot.
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and the Department of State support this legislation and have testified in its favor.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I am a constituent in [CITY, ZIP]. I’m writing to urge you to support the Michigan Voting Rights Act — Senate Bills 961-964 and House Bills 5969-5972.
Michigan currently has no standalone state Voting Rights Act. Our voting protections depend almost entirely on federal law — and federal courts are weakening those protections right now. This means Michigan voters need state-level protections now more than ever. Other states have already acted — it's time Michigan did too. Every Michigan voter deserves the protection of a state Voting Rights Act. Please vote YES on passage of these bills. Thank you for your time and for your service to our district.
